7 Reasons Why You Need To Visit Edinburgh

1. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe

I visited the city in the summer of 2016 with a group of friends to experience this festival. It is the single biggest festival of arts and culture on the planet and there are thousands of shows put on throughout August. It’s perfect for an English/Drama student or anyone who loves the theatre! The shows are also quite cheap usually £5-£10 and very well performed by independent groups or university students. My highlights were The Great Gatsby and The Picture of Dorian Gray.

2. Cheap Travel and Stay

If you live in the UK, Edinburgh is of course relatively close to you. You can travel via  train or plane. We chose to travel by plane from London and tickets were cheap (around £60). If you’re staying for just a few days with a group it’s also a more economical option to rent out an apartment rather than stay at a hotel. We stayed in an apartment just a 20 minute walk from the city centre and it cost us each £60 for 3 nights.

3. Stalls and Shops

During the festival, the streets of Edinburgh are full of different stalls. There are street shows, henna and hair-braiding stalls, shops lined across the edges, the city buzzes with life. If you’re a fan of jewellery this would be heaven on earth for you, there are many little stalls lined up next to one another selling rings, necklaces and bracelets. There are also more unconventional stalls, we saw one selling sword replicas from The Game of Thrones

4. Scenery

To date, Edinburgh is the most beautiful city I have seen, the scenery is absolutely stunning. The city encompasses the past and the present so breathtakingly. It’s a different kind of city-break, unusually peaceful and soothing.

5. Watching the Sun Set from Calton Hill

Sitting on a rooftop and watching the view from Calton Hill is the one surreal experience I will keep with me forever. Even the climb up is amazing, looking out onto the entire city. A lot of people sit still, observing the city from above until dusk arrives.

6. Architecture

All the buildings in Edinburgh are very unique. From the towering heights of the Edinburgh Castle to the Gothic cathedrals. It is unsurprising that the city is often referred to as “The Athens of the North”, the architecture certainly resonates this mighty aura.

7. The Scottish National Gallery

The gallery is a must-see for anyone visiting the city and admission is free! The art is from a vast selection of historical periods and it’s simply stunning.

Whether it’s with your friends or on your own, Edinburgh is a sensational place to visit. In the 3 days I spent there I didn’t manage to cram in all the activities I wanted to do but there’s so much more than this list. These are the highlights of my trip that make me want to go back.

Hopefully some of you will consider visiting, add it to your bucket list!
